History & Information
The Capitals finished the 2008-2009 regular
season with a record of 50-24-8 and a team record 108 points,
and they won their second consecutive Southeast
Division championship. They defeated the New
York Rangers in the first round of the 2009
Stanley Cup Playoffs 4 games to 3, overcoming a 3-1 deficit.
The Capitals were then defeated by the eventual champion
Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference semi-finals in seven

Washington Capitals
- Verizon Center
The arena opened as the MCI Center
on December 2, 1997 in downtown Washington's Chinatown.
When Verizon bought out MCI in 2006, the arena's name
was changed accordingly. The building replaced the US
Air Arena, which was located on the Capital
Beltway in Landover,
Maryland. Some complained that the building's construction,
by closing off a block of G St, corrupted the historic
L'Enfant layout of the Washington city streets.
