Vancouver Canucks - Team
History & Information
In the 2009-10 season, the Canucks were
faced with the longest road trip in NHL history, with 14
games over 6 weeks, from January 27 to March 13, 2010,
as a result of Vancouver hosting the 2010
Winter Olympics. This will allow General
Motors Place to be used for ice
hockey during the games, which
will shut down the NHL for 2 weeks. This will mark the first
time that an NHL market will be hosting an Olympics since
the league allowed its players to compete in the games, beginning
in Nagano,
Japan. GM Place will be "Canada Hockey Place" during
the games, as the IOC won't
allow corporate sponsorship for venues during the games.
It will also mark the first time that an NHL-sized rink has
been used during Winter Olympics. The Canucks' former arena,
Pacific Coliseum, will also be a venue during the games,
hosting figure skating and short
track speed skating.
Vancouver Canucks
- General Motors Place
GM Place was completed in 1995 at a
cost of C$160
million in private financing to replace the aging Pacific
Coliseum as the main venue for events in Vancouver and
to serve as the home arena to
the Vancouver
Canucks of the National
Hockey League and the Vancouver
Grizzlies of the National
Basketball Association. The Grizzlies spent six seasons
in Vancouver before moving to Memphis,
Tennessee for the 2001-02
season.
The arena was briefly home to the Vancouver
Ravens of the National
Lacrosse League from 2002 to
2004.
The operations of the team have since been suspended.
Attempts were made to revive the team in 2007 and again
in 2008.
