Chicago Blackhawks - Team
History & Information
The Blackhawks made another major free
agent purchase before the 2009-10
NHL season, signing Marián
Hossa to a 12-year contract worth 62.8 million dollars. In
addition to Hossa, the team also acquired Tomáš Kopecký,
John Madden, and Richard
Petiot. In
early July, general manager Dale
Tallon and the Blackhawks management came under fire
when the National
Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) claimed the
team did not submit offers to their restricted free agents
before the deadline. In
the worst case scenario, the team's unsigned restricted free
agents at the time, including Calder
Memorial Trophy finalist Kris
Versteeg, would have become unrestricted free agents. Despite
the ordeal, the Blackhawks were able to sign Versteeg and
all of their restricted free agents before the NHLPA could
take further actions. On
July 14, 2009, The Blackhawks demoted Tallon to the position
of Senior Adviser. Stan
Bowman, son of Scotty
Bowman, was promoted to general manager. The
Blackhawks resigned Patrick Kane & Jonathan Toews to
contract extensions worth $31.5 million over 5 years, and
Duncan Keith to a 13 year extension worth $72 million on
December 1, 2009
Chicago Blackhawks
- United Center
The United Center, which is currently
owned by Rocky
Wirtz and Reinsdorf, covers 960,000 square feet (89,187
m²) and is located on a 46-acre (19 ha) parcel,
west of the Chicago
Loop. The arena is the largest in the United States
in physical size, though not in capacity. Its exterior
bears a striking resemblance to that of Chicago
Stadium. It seats 19,717 (not including standing
room) for hockey (highest attendance at a Blackhawks
game in 2010 was 22,275 vs. Atlanta), 20,917 for basketball
and up to 23,500 for concerts.
The United Center hosts over 200 events per year and
has drawn over 20 million visitors since its opening.
It is known for routinely meeting or exceeding seating
capacity for Bulls and, as of 2008, Blackhawks games.
